A root bone is usually located around the hip or spine, and when it is moved, it grabs the entire body area including the spine, the head, and so on, except that it does not grab the IK foot or hand controls. The idea is that you can use this controller to move the bulk of the body into position while leaving the feet planted firmly where they are on the ground. A master bone is usually positioned on the ground, and when it is moved, the entire rig goes with it, including IK arms and legs. It is good for moving the character to a suitable starting position; or with some rigs it can be scaled in order to resize a character to fit a scene (not every rig can be resized, though). Unfortunately, not all riggers stick to the words root and master. Indeed, I have seen a lot of Blender rigs where the master is called root and the root is called torso. The main thing is that you should see whether there are primary bones for performing large body movement.

Any commercial transaction, whether in a shop on the street, over the Internet, or anywhere else, has several related tasks that must be carried out before it can be considered complete. For example, you can t simply remove an item of clothing from a fashion boutique without paying for it and say that you have bought it remuneration is (unfortunately!) an integral part of any purchase. In addition, a transaction can only complete successfully if each of the tasks carried out completes successfully. If a customer s credit card is rejected, for example, then no funds can be taken from it, so a purchase can t be made. The sequence of tasks carried out as part of a transaction is often thought of in terms of a pipeline. In this analogy, orders start at one end of the pipe and come out of the other end when they are completed. Along the way, they must pass through several pipeline sections, each of which is responsible for a particular task or a related group of tasks. If any pipeline section fails to complete, then the order gets stuck and might require outside interaction before it can move further along the pipeline, or it might be canceled completely. For example, the simple pipeline shown in Figure 18-1 applies to transactions in a street shop.

The path for loading bitmaps, and all other resources, is relative to the location of your project definition file (the .jdp file). We put the bitmap in a res folder at the same level as our src folder. Finally, we want to center the bitmap horizontally at the top of the screen. MainScreen lays out fields vertically top to bottom in the order that they re added, so the BitmapField will automatically appear at the top of the screen. But to horizontally center it, we need to specify the Field.FIELD_HCENTER style in its constructor. We ve also elected to make the BitmapField a member field instead of just declaring it locally in the constructor. We ll follow this pattern for all our fields making our user interface components member fields will become important as we start to handle user input. As always, make sure you are in pose mode when animating the rig (the rig is in object mode when opening). At the bottom of the Properties panel is a Rig Layers area containing buttons for turning the various controls on and off. On selecting a hand or arm bone, a slider for IK Arm appears at the very bottom, allowing you to switch to whether the arm acts as FK (slide left) or IK (slide right) controls.
